5 Simple Summer Hair Care Tips For Afro-Textured Hair

With summer just around the corner, it's time to think about adapting our hair care routines to protect and nourish our beautiful afro-textured hair. The warmer months bring sunshine, swimming, and outdoor activities, but they can also pose challenges for our curls and coils. The combination of heat, humidity, and exposure to the elements can lead to dryness, breakage, and frizz. However, with a few simple tips and tricks, you can keep your hair healthy, hydrated, and fabulous all summer long. Here are some essential summer hair care tips for afro-textured hair.

1. Hydration is Key:

One of the most important aspects of summer hair care is keeping your hair hydrated. The sun, chlorine from swimming pools, and salty seawater can all strip moisture from your strands, leaving them dry and brittle. To combat this, make sure to drink plenty of water to hydrate your hair from the inside out.

Additionally, incorporate a moisturizing routine into your hair care regimen. Deep conditioning treatments, leave-in conditioners, and moisturizing oils are your best friends during the summer months. Look for products that contain natural ingredients such as shea butter, coconut oil, and aloe vera, as they provide deep hydration and nourishment for afro-textured hair.

2. Protect Your Hair from UV Rays:

Just like your skin, your hair needs protection from the damaging effects of the sun's UV rays. Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause your hair to become dry, weak, and prone to breakage. To shield your strands from UV damage, consider wearing a hat or scarf when you're out in the sun. These accessories not only add a stylish touch to your summer look but also provide an extra layer of protection.

Another option is to use hair products that contain UV filters. These specially formulated products can help block out harmful UV rays and minimize the damage caused by sun exposure. Remember to reapply these products after swimming or excessive sweating.

3. Minimize Heat Styling:

During the summer, it's best to minimize the use of heat styling tools such as flat irons, curling wands, and blow dryers. Excessive heat can cause your hair to become dry and prone to breakage, especially when combined with the already drying effects of the sun and chlorine.

Instead, embrace your natural texture and opt for heat-free styling methods. Experiment with protective styles like braids, twists or bantu knots. These styles not only protect your hair from heat damage but also help to retain moisture and reduce frizz.

4. Protective Styling:

Protective styling is essential year-round, but it becomes even more crucial in the summer. Protective styles like twists help to minimize manipulation, reduce breakage, and retain moisture. They also provide an excellent opportunity to experiment with different looks and give your hair a break from daily styling.

Remember to maintain a proper hair care routine while wearing protective styles. Cleanse your scalp regularly, moisturize your hair, and ensure that your edges are not under excessive tension. It's also essential to give your hair a break between protective styles to prevent any potential damage.

5. Night-time Hair Care:

Don't neglect your hair care routine when the sun goes down. Summer nights can still be warm and humid, which can lead to frizz and dryness. Protect your hair while you sleep by wearing a satin bonnet, like Secure, wrapping it in a satin scarf or using a satin pillowcase. These materials help to retain moisture and reduce friction, preventing breakage and tangles.

Additionally, consider applying a small amount of moisturizer or a moisture sealant oil, like Protect, to your hair before bed to keep it hydrated overnight. This simple step will ensure that your hair is ready to face the summer heat the next day.

Conclusion:

Taking care of your afro-textured hair during the summer doesn't have to be a daunting task. By following these summer hair care tips, you can keep your curls and coils healthy, hydrated, and happy all season long. Remember to hydrate, protect from UV rays, minimize heat styling, embrace protective styles, and maintain a night-time hair care routine. With a little extra care, you can enjoy the sun and all the fun that summer brings without compromising the health and beauty of your hair.

  • I’ve purchased the Anoint hair growth oil which I love. Just starting to see a bit of hair growth around my edges. I would love to buy more but the 50ml doesn’t last very long, and can’t afford to keep purchasing all the time. I would really love a bigger bottle and I know it would cost more. But hopefully not to much

    Thank you

  • Purchased my first bottle for edge control and crown thinning. No real growth yet but liked the product. I have long locs. My only complaint is the 50ml bottle is far too small and does not really last long. Would be willing to invest in long term use if quantity size was bigger and economic for the texture of our hair.
